The film is inspired by the death of director Dan Scanlon’s father, when he and his brother were younger, and their relationship. Scanlon decided to write the story after hearing an audio clip of his father.

The first official poster and first look at the movie were released on May 30, 2019, with the first look airing during the NBA Finals.

On October 10, , a new trailer for the movie was released. On December 17th, a second trailer was released.

On January 1, 2020, the first two sneak peeks aired during commercial breaks of the «Player Select» 1-Up New Year’s marathon on Disney XD (USA).

On March 6, 2020, the new short film based on «The Simpsons«, «Maggie Simpson in Play Date with Destiny» is playing before the movie starts.

On March 20, 2020, Onward became digital on Movies Anywhere after the theatrical release. On April 3, 2020, it was streaming on Disney+ during the COVID-19 pandemic.

One Pixar tradition is to create trailers for their films that do not contain footage from the released film. Trailers for this film include:

• Sulley and Mike stumble into the wrong bedroom, after Mike misreads Mongolia as Magnolia. Sulley berates Mike for making the mistake, possibly due to his lack of knowledge in geography. Mike does not take this lightly, and sees it as Sulley teasing him for having one eye. But Sulley makes amends with Mike, and goes back to the canteen for some donuts. Mike briefly stays behind, but quickly changes his mind when a dog begins growling at him offscreen. Sulley promptly grabs Mike, and they return to Monsters. Inc. The background music is taken from the 1989 comedy Midnight Run, the theme of character Alonzo Moseley, who was played by actor Yaphet Kotto.
• In a preview shown before the first Harry Potter film, Sulley is shown playing charades with Mike, but Mike is unable to guess the phrase «Harry Potter.» The clip never specifically mentions Harry Potter, but the end states that Monsters, Inc. is playing right next door. Afterwards, Mike attempts to charade, but a bored Sulley quickly and correctly guesses Star Wars. A bewildered Mike asks how he does it.

Эту работу не приняли — пришлось Маккуину отскребать свой «труд» и всё делать заново. За это время Молния влюбился в Салли и уже не торопился покинуть Радиатор-Спрингс. Поэтому на этот раз он поработал на славу, и дорога получилась лучше, чем была.

Помимо дороги, Молния сделал для Радиатор-Спрингс много полезного. Он помог каждому в городе. Купил у Луиджи шины. Заправился у Филмора. Испытал прибор ночного видения у Сержанта. Перекрасился у Рамона. Приобрёл сувениры у Лиззи. Починил неоновые вывески и светофор.

Лос-Анджелес мотоспорт автодром

Лос-Анджелес мотоспорт автодром — это стадион, на котором обычно проходят гонки за Кубок Большого Поршня. Автодром был построен в 1946 году, когда гонки стали популярны. Тогда ещё там не продавались сувениры и стояли такие же фонари, как на улице. Зал не освещался совсем, и спасали тачек лишь фары. Но не у всех они были.

Зал вмещает в себя 100 000 тачек, при этом в нём довольно широкие проходы между партерами. Самый знаменитый работник — Брайан, продавец сувениров.

Кому принадлежит индустрия развлечений

Таких медиагигантов в мире всего шесть — ещё Comcast, Time Warner, News Corp, Sony и Viacom, — и структура их бизнеса во многом похожа. У каждого из них есть свои киностудии, телевизионные каналы, звукозаписывающие студии, издательства, магазины и тематические парки. • Their decontamination methods are often painful.
• Their name (Child Detection Agency) may be a take on the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency).
• It is unknown what they look like under their biohazard suits. Even so, they resemble various «species» of monsters, so speculations can be made.
• The CDA may also be the monsters’ equivalent of the police, especially the SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) or the FBI.
• The signal for the CDA, 2319, may be a reference to the letters «W» and «S», which are the 23rd and 19th letters of the Latin alphabet. WS may stand for «white sock», a common threat to monsters, which can only be ridden by the CDA. W and S are also the initials of Mike and Sulley’s last names (Wazowski and Sullivan).
• The organization bears many similarities to the real-life CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), due to their uniform (hazmat suits) and the nature of their work.
• There may be at least 99,999 members of the CDA since their uniforms display five-digit numerals.
• Agent 00002 is the only member who is revealed to be a father.
• There are at least six different CDA body types.
• Many of them have the same number, but this is an error. 
• The number «2319» can briefly be seen on the side of a subway railcar in Soul, during the scene where Joe (in the cat’s body) and 22 (in Joe’s body) spot a person playing an instrument on the underground platform.

Up

Dug is a golden retriever who belongs to Charles Muntz.

He is a fun-loving dog who speaks English via a special collar that translates his thoughts into speech, invented by his former master, Charles Muntz. Early in the film, Dug, one of Alpha’s canine minions, is searching for a large bird that Muntz has been trying to capture for decades. He runs into Carl Fredricksen, Russell, and Kevin (the bird he is searching for). However, immediately after meeting Carl, Dug begins to idolize him and sees him as his master. He winds up switching sides, assisting Carl, Russell and Kevin.

He is every ounce a puppy in behavior and quickly becomes attached to Carl, who is at first hesitant to accept Dug. When he does, Dug expresses his joy in a manner that leaves no doubt that he prefers his new master

During the end credits of the film, it is revealed that Dug had mated with another golden retriever (with similarities to himself), and they had many puppies (probably much to Carl’s grief); at least twenty of them were caught on photo.

Ian Lightfoot

Ian a newly 16-year-old elf, yearns for the father he lost back before he was born. Ian is sweet and determined with the best of intentions, but his lack of confidence and nervous energy trips him up more often than not. Ian is convinced that if only he had his father’s guidance, his life wouldn’t be so complicated and messy. “Ian is the everyman,” says Scanlon. “He’s a little introverted like I am. He’s a logical kid, practical. He understands the world he lives in and just wants to fit into that world—especially at age 16. He doesn’t want to change the world. He’d rather go unnoticed.”

His father’s unexpected gift on his birthday sets into motion the quest of a lifetime—but Ian’s not sure if his fantasy-obsessed, mortifyingly immodest brother Barley can get them where they need to go. According to Scanlon, while Ian is the one with the ability to perform magic, it’s Barley who understands how it all works. “Ian finally realizes he can perform the spell his dad left them, but he’s not good enough to finish it. Barley tries to help, but Ian fears Barley’s help will only make things worse.” 

Scanlon says that magic is a big part of the story—but that there’s more to it than spells and spectacle. “Magic is a metaphor for their potential. In order to do magic, you have to take risks. You have to believe in yourself. You have to trust yourself. You have to listen. No matter what magic Ian does, he always has to be challenged in a way that allows him to grow.”

6 — «Рататуй» (2007)

Monsters, Inc.

The CDA is first seen arriving at the Monsters, Inc. factory after Jerry calls the agents upon hearing Charlie’s alert about a child’s sock on George Sanderson’s back. The agents arrive at the factory to remove the sock, which is then destroyed into smithereens, and its remains are vacuumed up. Then the agents decontaminate George by shaving his fur off, having him showered, and placing a cone on his head. The agents are seen again arriving at Harryhausen’s after the Bartender calls the CDA about a human girl nicknamed Boo in the restaurant. They arrive at the restaurant and round-up almost every patron, including Celia Mae, for decontamination, and they envelop the restaurant in a gigantic green force field.

The CDA deployed in full force when all of Monstropolis became aware of the incidents of Boo’s invasion into the Monster World, and the Monsters, Inc. facility was thoroughly searched for evidence. Upon learning that Mike Wazowski and Sulley are the ones who have brought Boo in, Mr. Waternoose tried to have the CDA arrest Mike and Sulley so that he could take Boo and forcefully extract screams from her, but they ultimately turned on him and arrested him when they learned that Waternoose would kidnap thousands of children to satisfy his own agenda.

When Sulley discovers that laugh is more powerful than scream, the Child Detection Agency no longer exists. In place of it, comes the Comedy Detection Agency.[] Their job also changes to solving if a joke is funny or not. However, it’s unknown whether or not this is actually canon, because as far as we know, that name was only mentioned in «Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor». Also, at the beginning of Monsters, Inc.: Laugh Factory issue number 4, the headquarters show the name «Crime Detection Agency» on the side.

Alternative Versions

One month after the movie’s theatrical release (on December 7, 2001) a version with alternative end credits was brought into theaters. There, the credits are accompanied by a «blooper reel», followed by the musical «Put That Thing Back Where it Came From or So Help Me», performed by the cast. This version can be found as a separate feature on the collector’s Edition DVD and in the credits of the VHS and 4:3 full-screen DVD versions as well as the end credits of the R2-R5 widescreen version for Eastern Europe. As is common for Pixar movies, international versions differ in the contents. Many English inscriptions are either removed or replaced by more generic symbols, especially in Monstropolis and at the Scare-floor. For instance, the «Stalk/Don’t Stalk» traffic light is replaced by a green two-headed monster (for «Stalk») and a forbidding red hand (for «Don’t Stalk»). Additionally, an animation of Sulley telling Boo to go to sleep was changed for Non-English version, as in the US version, he holds up two fingers to illustrate «to» in «You — go — to — sleep». For the title sequence, language versions that do not use the Latin Alphabet replace the letters «W» «A» «L» T» «D» «I» «S» «N» «E» «Y» «P» «I» «C» «T» «U» «R» «E» «S» with eyeballs peeking out the doors. Several European DVDs contain only the «international» version, whereas the US DVDs and US/UK VHS and Blu-ray contain the «US» version. Some of the examples for alternative angles can be seen in the bonus material of the 2-Disc DVD and Blu-ray of the film.

The film was re-released in theaters in 3D on December 19, 2012, and it featured the outtakes in 3D during the credits just like the movie.

There is a parody of Monsters, Inc. in the Cartoon Network show, MAD. It is called «Poké-monsters, Inc.» and involves Ash Ketchum being released in the monster world rather than Boo.

Plot

Luca Paguro, a timid young sea monster living off the coast of the Italian city Portorosso, herds goatfish and is forbidden by his parents to approach the surface, as humans might hunt him. One day, Luca meets Alberto Scorfano, a fellow sea monster child who lives alone above the surface, claiming that his father simply isn’t around much. Alberto encourages Luca to adventure out of the ocean, showing him that sea monsters look exactly human when dry, but return to their true forms when wet. Luca follows Alberto to his hideout, where the boys connect while making and riding a makeshift, fragile Vespa. Upon discovering their son’s actions, Luca’s parents plan to send Luca to live in the deep sea with his uncle Ugo. In retaliation, Luca and Alberto run away to Portorosso to find a Vespa and travel the world.

The boys run afoul of Ercole Visconti, a local bully and repeat champion of the Portorosso Cup Race, but Giulia Marcovaldo, a young girl, helps them escape. In hopes of winning the money needed for a Vespa, the boys and Giulia form a team for the triathlon, which involves swimming, pasta-eating, and biking. Unable to swim without revealing themselves, Luca and Alberto respectively take on the biking and pasta-eating races, while Giulia takes the swimming race. Ercole vows to beat the group.

While the boys befriend Giulia’s fisherman father Massimo, Luca’s parents head to the surface to find their son. Giulia teaches Luca about school, and the two bond over a love of learning, especially about astronomy. Alberto becomes jealous of Luca and Giulia’s growing friendship. When Luca starts ignoring Alberto’s advice, and tries changing their plans to going to school instead of traveling, he and Alberto fight. In anger, Alberto deliberately reveals his true form to Giulia. Luca feigns surprise at the transformation, and a heartbroken Alberto is driven off by Ercole. Giulia later deliberately splashes water on Luca and sees his true identity; she sends him away for his own safety.

Luca attempts to reconcile with Alberto, and discovers that Alberto’s father deliberately abandoned him long ago, making Alberto think he was a bad kid who should not have friends. Luca sets out to win the Vespa on his own, to make things right. After several mishaps, Luca takes the lead in the bicycle race, but is forced to take shelter when it starts to rain. Alberto arrives with an umbrella, but Ercole knocks it away and both boys are revealed as sea monsters. They flee Ercole, who now intends to harpoon them; Giulia helps by smashing her bike into Ercole’s, but she is injured. Luca and Alberto turn back to help her, and are defended from monster hunters by Massimo, who reveals that the boys are his friends. He also points out they have crossed the finish line and won the race. Other disguised sea monsters reveal themselves, including Luca’s family, and the townsfolk happily welcome them. Meanwhile, Ercole is humiliated by his henchmen, who were fed up with his abuse.

Luca and Alberto purchase a Vespa, but the latter sells it to buy a train ticket for Luca, allowing him to go to school in Genoa with Giulia. Luca’s family, Massimo, and Alberto see Luca and Giulia off at the train station, where they all promise to stay in touch. During the credits, Luca meets Giulia’s mother and attends school, while showing off his sea monster appearance. Massimo becomes Alberto’s father figure, and Alberto and Luca’s family enjoy interacting with the humans in Portorosso.
